Years ago I, Carolyn Curtis, developed this out-of-the-ordinary system for my own sewing school in the 1980’s. At the time no one thought that young children could use a sewing machine to sew their own clothes. I was about to prove them wrong!

I was motivated by three reasons. First, there were no sewing classes available for children. This presented a wonderful opportunity for me to teach the kids in my area to sew.

Second, there were no ‘kid friendly’ patterns available anywhere. This was the beginning of my new found Program and I had no idea whatsoever that my ‘out-of-the-ordinary’ system for teaching kids to sew would generate the interest it did.

Third, with a growing family we certainly could use additional discretionary income. I was flabbergasted when parents were willing to pay me to teach their children to sew using my newly invented system.

Pioneering the first program of its kind anywhere, more than a million children have learned to sew using my system taught by a Kids Can Sew & Fashion Design Teacher in their area. •Carolyn Curtis is a professional pattern maker and has designed patterns for Simplicity Pattern Company in New York. • In the sewing industry Carolyn’s Kids Can Sew® Program started the revolution of teaching kids as young as six to sew using a sewing machine and the Kids Can Sew® patterns. Before she developed her system there were no classes or patterns available for young children to sew.
